Primary Purpose:

The Dyslexia/Reading Specialist works with administrators, classroom teachers, campus support staff to plan and implement quality multi-sensory reading instruction as well as dyslexia interventions for students in need of support. The Dyslexia/Reading Specialist may also provides reading and language arts staff development on the campus, evaluates students to determine reading strengths and weaknesses, plans and implements programming for parent involvement and family reading. This position may also help in the implementation of gifted and talented activities.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Valid Texas Teaching Certificate
  • Master’s Degree (preferred)
  • Bilingual/ESL Certificate/Endorsement (preferred)    
  •  GT Training (preferred)

  Experience

  • Three or more years teaching experience.
  • Experience in working with students with reading difficulties preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Provide specialized instruction for students identified with characteristics of dyslexia as set by state requirements.
  2. Provide support services for students experiencing reading difficulties.
  3. Provide guidance for teachers and campus staff on intervention strategies for students identified as At-Risk for reading disabilities.
  4. Serve as a resource for providing parents and staff with information on dyslexia and reading strategies.
  5. Serve as a resource for Campus Response to Intervention (RTI) team.
  6. Conduct assessments for students referred for dyslexia and communicate results and recommendations to Section 504 committee.
  7. Collaborate with campus and district staff in coordinating services for students enrolled in the dyslexia intervention program.
  8. Compile, submit and maintain periodic reports to campus and district staff for accountability purposes.
  9. Provide annual staff development to campus staff to ensure understanding of dyslexia and required accommodations.
  10. Maintains accurate pupil accounting records in compliance with local and state requirements.
  11. Participates in the planning and evaluation of the school program.
  12. Takes part in the in-service education program of the school.
  13. Perform such other teacher duties assigned by campus Principal and/or Section 504 Coordinator.
  14. Other duties as assigned
